Amazon's controversial move: Canceling a Movie Over a Marquee Joke
When it comes to handling jokes, Donald Trump and Jeff Bezos are no strangers to the spotlight. So, it's quite unexpected that Amazon decided to pull the movie 'Melania' from a theater due to some playful banter on its marquee.
The Oregonian first broke the story, later picked up by The Daily Beast, about an Oregon theater renowned for its creative movie promotions. Amazon requested the theater to cease screenings of 'Melania' after they advertised it with witty statements like, "Does Melania wear Prada? Find out Friday" and a Sun Tzu quote, "To defeat your enemy, you must know them. Melania starts Friday."
But here's where it gets controversial. The theater manager, Jordan Perry, revealed that Amazon called and asked them to stop showing the film, stating that the studio was unhappy with their marketing approach. The theater then changed the marquee to a bold statement: "Amazon called. Our marquee made them mad. All Melania showings cancelled. Shop at Whole Foods instead." This was followed by a promotion for Amazon Prime.
The theater's Instagram account shared that they faced backlash from local audiences even before the film was pulled. Many were outraged that the theater, known for its quirky charm, was showing 'Melania' at all.
"We received numerous messages questioning our decision to screen Melania and criticizing our humor. Now, the film is gone, not due to public demand but by Amazon's request," the theater's statement implied.
Interestingly, the theater sold $196 worth of tickets for the film in one weekend, despite the local opposition. The manager, Perry, booked the film for a light-hearted reason, considering the area's political leanings and the lack of new releases.
He pondered, "Wouldn't it be hilariously odd to screen Melania in a place known for its rebellious spirit?"
Unfortunately, the joke didn't land with everyone, leaving us with an intriguing question: Should businesses always prioritize profit over creative expression, even when it comes to harmless fun?
