The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has stated their primary concern revolves around the "safety and well-being" of their players. This decision comes amidst escalating political tensions between the two nations. But here's where it gets controversial: the BCB's concerns were reportedly sparked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) directive to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Mustafizur Rahman, a key player for Bangladesh.
Originally, Bangladesh's matches were slated to be held in Kolkata and Mumbai, with their opening game against the West Indies scheduled for February 7th at Eden Gardens. This last-minute decision by the BCB has thrown the tournament schedule into disarray, forcing the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider the arrangements.
In an official statement, the BCB explained their position: "Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh Government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh National Team will not travel to India for the tournament under the current conditions." They have formally requested the ICC to relocate their matches to a venue outside of India.
This decision was swiftly backed by Bangladesh's sports advisor, Asif Nazrul, who took to social media to support the board's move. He wrote, "We welcome this decision taken in the context of the radical communal policies of the Indian cricket board." This statement, however, could be seen as a strong political commentary on the situation.
Behind the scenes, the BCB deliberated extensively before reaching this conclusion, with directors holding two video-conference meetings. The final decision was made on Sunday afternoon, leading to a formal request to the ICC. "India said that they are unable to provide security for one player, so how can they give security for the whole team?" a BCB official stated, highlighting the core of their concerns. "We have to think about the fans and journalists who will travel to India. We can't play in India. We can play in Sri Lanka."
