A British traveler with a working holiday visa has been sentenced to four years in Australia after a drunk e-scooter incident that killed another man.
Alicia Kemp, 25, from Redditch, Worcestershire, was traveling at about 20–25 km/h (12–15 mph) when she struck 51-year-old Thanh Phan from behind on a Perth sidewalk in May. Witnesses said she had been drinking with a friend for much of the afternoon, and her blood alcohol level was more than three times the legal limit.
Phan, a father of two, suffered a brain bleed after the impact and died two days later in hospital. A friend who rode on the scooter with Kemp was injured as well, sustaining a fractured skull and a broken nose, though their injuries were not life-threatening.
Kemp, who was in Australia on a working holiday visa, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death at the Perth Magistrates Court in August.
“You, Miss Kemp, are the cautionary tale,” Judge Wendy Hughes told her during sentencing on Friday. “E-scooters are not toys.”
The sentence will be backdated to June 1, and Kemp will be eligible for parole after serving two years. Her driver’s license will remain disqualified for two years.
