CityStats Report 2025: Shockwave for East Baton Rouge Economy & Safety (2026)

A recent CityStats report has revealed some concerning trends in East Baton Rouge Parish, highlighting a decline in key prosperity indicators. The parish is facing a double-edged challenge, with income levels dropping and unemployment rising, raising questions about the future of the community's economic well-being.

The report paints a worrying picture, showing a 5.6% decrease in median household income, which is a significant drop from the previous year's figure. Unemployment has also increased, reaching 4.2%, a notable rise from the stable 3.2% seen in the last two reports. The correlation between these two trends is unclear, leaving room for speculation and further investigation.

But here's where it gets controversial: the report also indicates that more than 20% of residents now live below the poverty line, a stark increase from 18.5% last year. This is a critical issue, especially considering that roughly one-quarter of children in the parish are also living in poverty. Black families, in particular, face the highest poverty rates at 27.1%, which is almost double that of many other racial groups.

The report provides further insights:

  • There's a growing desire for children to stay in the parish, with 28% of adults expressing this wish, a 30% increase from the previous year.
  • Nearly 60% of residents are concerned about housing costs, indicating a potential strain on the community.
  • Homeownership stands at 61%, a stable figure.
  • The parish population has slightly increased to 453,022, a rise from the previous report's 448,467.
  • Crime reduction remains a top priority, with 48% of residents believing the parish is heading in the wrong direction, up from 43% last year.
  • More than a quarter of respondents struggle to afford balanced meals, a concerning statistic.
  • Teen birth rates have decreased to 2% of total births, a positive development.
  • Overdose deaths have declined by approximately 100 from the previous year, a notable improvement.
  • For the first time since 2013, no cyclist fatalities were recorded in 2024, a significant achievement for road safety.
  • The average commute time is 23 minutes, a relatively short duration.
  • Passenger traffic at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport has increased by nearly 11%, a boost for the local economy.

During a Q&A session following the report's presentation, City-Parish Chief Administrative Officer Christel Slaughter addressed these concerns. She emphasized that crime reduction is a key focus for Mayor Sid Edwards, highlighting a decline in all major crime indicators in 2025. Slaughter attributed these improvements to the hiring of former Baton Rouge Police Chief Jeff LeDuff as the director of public safety, along with investments in technology and the creation of the Office of Violence Prevention.

"They are adopting best practices from other places, which is something we desperately need to do more of," Slaughter said, expressing optimism about the future. "I believe we're making progress and are on the right track."
