The Rugby Football League (RFL) has received an inquiry about staging an exhibition cross-code match. They'll need to convince not only the RFL but also the Rugby Football Union (RFU), the governing body for union in England. And this is the part most people miss: they must also navigate the complex world of conflicting schedules.
England's rugby league team is facing a squeeze due to an expanded Super League, which has limited their mid-season game opportunities in 2026. Simultaneously, England's rugby union side is gearing up for the inaugural Nations Championship, filling their usual Test match windows. The RFU also has agreements with professional clubs regarding player availability, ensuring top players are in prime condition for England's major games.
Rhodri Jones, managing director of RL Commercial, confirmed the inquiry, stating that while they haven't assessed the proposal yet, they'll consider it if there's a tangible benefit to the sport.
This isn't the first time we've seen cross-code experimentation. Back in the mid-1990s, when rugby union turned professional, we witnessed matches between Bath and Wigan, the dominant forces in their respective codes. Wigan, with stars like Andy Farrell and Shaun Edwards, dominated the league match, winning 82-6, but lost the union game 44-19. In 2003, Sale beat St Helens in a match that blended league and union rules. More recently, the annual 745 game, which began in 2024, uses composite rules to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness.
Hybrid Rugby's approach includes a unique rule: a 60-second limit for teams to advance past the halfway line. When in their own half, league rules apply; once they cross into the opposition's territory, union rules take over.
