Neo-Nazi Leader's 'Rape' Threat Was Art, He Claims
A neo-Nazi leader is defending his alleged call to 'rhetorically rape' a federal politician, arguing it was a 'philosophical term of art'. The leader, who is facing charges over the threat, claims his social media post was misunderstood and was intended to be a metaphorical expression.
The incident occurred after the politician, Spender, condemned the neo-Nazi group for holding a police-authorised rally outside the NSW parliament on November 8. The leader's barrister, Sebastian De Brennan, presented a sworn statement and supporting documents to the Downing Centre Local Court, arguing that the post was a philosophical reference. Davis, who has been in custody for nearly two months, is seeking bail and his lawyer highlights the urgency due to potential delays.
The court, however, is overloaded with cases and cannot immediately hear the bail application, adjourning it to the following day. The government is also set to debate legislation next week that would give them powers to prescribe hate groups, even those below terrorist listing thresholds. The neo-Nazi organisation has announced its dissolution to avoid prosecution for recruiting people to spread racial hatred. Under the proposed laws, organisers, supporters, and recruiters face up to 15 years in prison, while members face seven years.
