Norovirus on Cruise Ships: CDC Outbreak Update & Prevention Tips (2026)

The CDC has confirmed another norovirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship, marking the 21st such incident this year. The affected vessel is Aida Cruises’ AIDAdiva, which sickened nearly 100 passengers during its nearly month-long voyage from November 10 to December 16. The cruise line reported the outbreak to the CDC on November 30.

According to the CDC, ninety-five passengers and six crew members experienced diarrhea and vomiting. The ship carried more than 2,000 passengers and about 640 crew members in total for the voyage. In response, AIDAdiva intensified cleaning and disinfection across the ship, isolated those who fell ill, and collected stool samples for testing. The company also worked with CDC Vessel Sanitation Program officials on sanitation procedures and case reporting.

Cruise operators note that norovirus infections tend to surge between November and April, which aligns with seasonal patterns observed on land as well. An AIDA spokesperson told USA TODAY that enhanced hygiene measures have already led to a decline in new cases.

Medical experts emphasize how contagious norovirus can be, especially in crowded settings like ships. In outbreaks, prompt isolation of affected individuals and rigorous hand hygiene are crucial to curb transmission. Handwashing with soap and water is generally more effective than alcohol-based sanitizers for preventing spread.

This latest event adds to a rising tally of cruise ship norovirus outbreaks this year, bringing the total to 21, as tracked by the CDC. Fox News Digital reached out to AIDA Cruises for comment.

Would you consider stricter onboard health measures during peak norovirus season to prevent future outbreaks, or do you think current protocols already strike the right balance between safety and everyday travel experience?
