The winter travel season at SFO has seen an unprecedented boom, with 1.8 million travelers departing or arriving over just 11 days, from November 20th to December 1st. This surpasses the previous record of 1.78 million set during Thanksgiving 2019. The airport's definition of the holiday period is somewhat flexible, as many travelers take a full week off, making the busiest days the Friday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after.
For passengers, this increase in travel likely meant longer lines at security, more crowded spaces, and competition for limited resources like charging stations. However, for San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, these high travel numbers signify a thriving tourism industry and a robust economic recovery. Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet shared similar sentiments, viewing the winter travel season as a critical indicator of travel demand and operational efficiency.
